Planning Your Program

Neuroscience is an interdisciplinary concentration, combining the fields of biology and psychology. Students in the program complete a set of neuroscience requirements at the brain/behavior interface. Essentially, biology majors are required to take certain psychology courses and psychology majors are required to take certain biology courses. In this way, students can gain both a breadth and depth of knowledge in the field of neuroscience—a foundation in their particular science, plus the addition of specialized neuroscience courses in both disciplines.

A biology major might take an upper level curriculum consisting of biology courses with a neuroscience focus and one advanced level neuroscience course in psychology while a psychology major would take just the opposite, an upper level curriculum of psychology courses with a neuroscience focus and one advanced level neuroscience course in biology.

All students, regardless of major, complete neuroscience research and write a research paper. Because of the scheduling demands of the concentration, students are strongly encouraged to apply to the program during the fall semester of their sophomore year to ensure that they meet all of the curriculum’s requirements in time for graduation.
